Six threes for Scott in Central women’s basketball road win

ELSAH, ILL.—A career-best six 3-point goals for guard Samantha Scott (Davenpor, North Scott HS) and a double-double by center Allison Van Gorp (sophomore, Pella, Pella Christian HS) in her season debut fueled an encouraging 78-70 Central College women’s basketball victory Saturday over Principia College (Ill.).

It’s the season’s first road win for the Dutch (3-4).

With a game-high 18 points, Scott was among four players in double figures. Freshman point guard Jasmyn Williams (Denver, Colo., Arvada West HS) had 13 points and six steals. Van Gorp, who was sidelined by an off-season injury, gave the Dutch a big lift inside with 12 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth career double-double, while guard Abby Johnson (sophomore, Ankeny) added 10 points, six boards and two blocks. Guard Kelsea Hurley (senior, Mesa, Ariz., Desert Mountain HS) had seven rebounds and four assists and guard Hannah Dau (sophomore, Paullina, South O’Brien HS) had five rebounds and six assists.

Coach Moran Lonning said Central’s crisp ball movement was the key to that scoring balance.

“I thought we did a great job of moving the ball and sharing the ball,” she said. “We still ended up with 19 assists, which was awesome, even after some missed layups and open shots. I liked how we were able to work the ball and make the other team play some defense.”

The teams traded the first-half lead with Principia (3-2) up 33-28 with 3:38 left. But back-to-back threes by Scott sparked an 8-0 burst and the Dutch were up 38-35 at halftime as Central shot 57.9% in the second period. Principia held a brief 48-46 third-quarter advantage but an 8-0 run that included threes from Scott and Johnson put Central ahead to stay.

The Dutch were outshot 38.2% to 37.1% but outrebounded the Panthers 50-43.

Lonning was not surprised by Scott’s breakout performance.

“She is an elite shooter and I knew at some point she was going to catch fire,” she said. “I love that she’s continuing to move. She’s never standing still so she’s super hard to guard.”

Van Gorp, a 6-foot, 3-inch post, received second-team all-conference honors as a rookie and showed no signs of rust in 16 minutes of action off the bench.

“I was very impressed with her first game back, with how she knew the plays, stayed calm and rebounded tough,” Lonning said.

Central kicks off American Rivers play Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. with a women’s-men’s doubleheader at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Prairie Wolves were 3-2 heading into a Saturday non-conference game with Sarah Lawrence College (N.Y.) at the Colorado College Classic.

Lonning likes how her club has adapted in the pre-conference slate with a new coach and several new faces in the lineup. Those seven games helped prepare the Dutch for conference play.

“We’ve had to struggle through some things and, hopefully, the things we’ve failed at, we’re going to fail forward and adjust,” she said.
