Oskaloosa, Iowa – If you stopped by the Oskaloosa Elementary School on Thursday, excitement filled the air as students enjoyed one of the most looked forward to events of the year.

The Oskaloosa PTO and its many volunteers bring in inflatables for students to enjoy, while Mahaska Drug arrives with their SnoBiz trailer and serves up treats.

Friday, May 25th, is the students last day of school for the 2017-18 year. Teachers and staff will continue work for the next week with professional development.

Building Principal Mike Dursky said that summer school then begins on June 4th, continuing until June 29th.

The elementary building will also be a summer lunch program site, where all kids 18 and under can come to get a meal.

While all that activity goes on in the building, the staff is focused on preparing for the 2018-19 school year. Painting projects are completed, floors are stripped and waxed.

Earlier in the week, all the students in the elementary took a hike from their building to the Lacey Stadium. Members of the staff were joined by Mahaska County Emergency Management, Oskaloosa Police and more to help ensure the safety of students as they crossed the road.

Hy-Vee once again sponsored their Kids Fit day, designed to keep kids moving, while helping them learn good eating habits.

If you are curious how many students make up the largest elementary building in the state, there are 977 students, and 150 faculty members. They all took a moment to pose for a picture to document the day.
