Report: Efficiency Efforts Exceed Expectations
Biannual study shows Iowa is well on its way to saving $1.7 billion
DES MOINES – Governor Chet Culver’s call for implementing cost-savings and efficiencies throughout the state is exceeding expectations, according to a study released today.
The report, which monitors newly implemented efficiencies and cost-saving measures created by an executive order and legislation, shows that the statewide effort is ensuring Iowa will save approximately $1.7 billion over the next five years.
The cost-savings and efficiencies come from several different arenas, from reducing the number of state employees through last year’s early retirement to creating a centralized and streamlined IT program.
“This is good news for all Iowans,” Culver said. “It shows that state employees are committed to giving the best possible services at the lowest possible cost to all citizens.”
In Fiscal Year 2011, savings on efficiencies are now estimated to be a total of approximately $298 million for all budget funds – up from a projection of $270 million last March.
