Puddle Jumping For Some Jr. Naturalists

These Jr. Naturalists take on the challenge of 'Puddle Jumping'

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Laughs and smiles were plentiful as the sun warmed the cool morning at the Russell Wildlife Area Nature Center.

Participants were treated to guessing games, even one that included food. A chocolate treat was disguised to look like coyote ‘scat’ and the day campers had to guess what it really was. It wasn’t long before the chocolate smell gave it away. One young camper said it was “good”.

Next, 3 teams were formed for a ‘puddle jumping’ competition. This is where each camper has to dip a plastic cup into a bucket of water, transfer that small cup of water to a bucket on the other end of the course and then run the cup back to the next team member in line.

As water splashed the participants, they made their way back and fourth as fast as they could. Finally after some time, one team accomplished the mission of emptying their bucket. A few cracked cups made the process even more entertaining.

They will be enjoying day camp through Thursday starting at 10 am each day.

Kids aren’t the only ones able to have fun in the great outdoors. The Mahaska County Conservation Board will host a Des Moines River Float this Saturday.

On Saturday, June 16 join the Mahaska County Conservation Board and the Mahaska Wellness coalition on a canoe and kayak float on the Des Moines River. Beginning at 9:00 am, we will float for about 2 1/2 hours along the river. There is no cost to participate in this event and the MCCB has a limited number of canoes and kayaks available to borrow. Participants may also bring their own canoe or kayak. The route will begin or end at the Eveland Access and due to the fluctuating river levels, the route will be determined the week of the float. All pre-registrants will be contacted about the float plans. Pre-registration is required. Call the Mahaska County Conservation Board at (641)673-9327 to sign up.
