Montezuma, Iowa | Age 91

Pauline Playle-Ell, 91, of Montezuma died Thursday, October 29, 2015 at her rural Montezuma home.

Pauline Elizabeth Playle-Ell, daughter of Harley and Ethel Martin Johnson, was born on February 3, 1924 at her parents’ farm home.

Pauline attended country school near West Liberty through the eighth grade. Pauline married Sanford Eldon Playle on October 24, 1947 at her parents’ home. To this union one daughter was born, Anita.

Pauline was very proud of receiving her GED the same year that her daughter, Anita, graduated in 1977.

Pauline was a typical housewife and farmer’s wife, helping out with chores or wherever she was needed. She worked part-time at the Montezuma Republican and at several restaurants, including the Maidrite Cafe and Malzuma, before working at the Montezuma Sale Barn for over 30 years before it closed. Eldon passed away on November 30, 1985. Pauline married Bill Ell on December 10, 1989.

Over the years, Pauline enjoyed hosting many friends and guests at her home and invited them to “put their feet under her kitchen table” to enjoy a homemade meal and to introduce them to “Polly’s Hilltop Cafe”. Pauline was very faithful and a lifelong member of the West Liberty Church of Christ. Over the years, she taught Sunday School and helped with Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed music, traveling, reading and spending time with her family. She will always be remembered as a wonderful cook.

Pauline is preceded in death by her husbands, Eldon Playle and Bill Ell; her two infant sons, Bruce Playle and Martin Playle; and her sisters, Rachel Daugherty and Dorothy Williams.

She is survived by her daughter, Anita (& Louis “Butch”) Gilbert of Anamosa; her step children: Randy (& Cathy) Ell of Yoakum, Texas, Mike (& Adriana) Ell of Chanute, Kansas, and Jay Marie (& Chet) Baugher of Chanute, Kansas; her brother-in-law, Walter Daugherty of Vandalia; her sister, Marilyn (& Wendell) Hardeman of Fayetteville, Arkansas; nine grandchildren; several great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a host of many friends.

Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma.
Visitation will begin on Wednesday after 12:00 pm with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
Burial will be held in the West Liberty Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the West Liberty Church.
