Visitation: will begin at 11:00 a.m., Thursday morning, March 08, 2012 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be present from 5 – 6:30 p.m. to greet visitors. At 6:30 p.m., a Masonic Service will be conducted by Council Lodge #644.
Funeral Service: 10 a.m., Friday morning, March 09, 2012 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Alvern Boetsma of the Good News Chapel officiating.
Interment: Shaul Cemetery with Military Honors by the Ottumwa Honor Guard.
Paul died Tuesday afternoon at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa at 92 years, seven months and 19 days of age.
Paul Durward Robbins, son of Charles Nelson & Zella Mae Myers Robbins, was born July 18, 1919, in Floris, Iowa. He was a 1937 graduate of Fremont High School, where he played on the basketball, baseball and track teams. After graduation he worked at various jobs: driving a semi truck, at a grocery store, and as a farm hand. Feb. 17, 1941, he entered the U.S. Army, where he served with the 6th Infantry Division in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was discharged as a Technician Fifth Grade on Nov. 15, 1945, and was awarded a Bronze Star. He married Lorraine Luella Mason Graham Oct. 5, 1957, in Eureka, Illinois; they made their home in Oskaloosa. At that time, Paul was working for the Keebler Biscuit Company as a salesman, he worked there until 1964. He then went to work at Montgomery Wards, where he managed the paint department until his retirement in 1978. Paul was a member of American Legion, the V.F.W., and the Eagles Lodge; he was a third generation Mason and Past Master of both the Masonic Council Lodge #644 and the TriLuminar Lodge #18. He enjoyed writing poetry, woodworking, gardening, golfing, playing cards and studying history.
Paul is survived by his step daughters: Carol McDowell of Ottumwa, Sharon Walters of Oskaloosa, and Leslie (Daryl) Nuehring of Oskaloosa; seven grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren; a brother, Harold Dean Robbins of Ames, IA and a sister, Donna Joann Lund of Tacoma, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers: Donald, Dale, Maurice and Darrell Robbins, an infant sister, Lucille Robbins, and two great granddaughters.
