Eight OMS sixth grade students under the direction of Michelle Coleman participated in the third annual Southeast Iowa District Elementary Honor Band. The honor band was held on April 22, 2017, at Washington High School in Washington, IA.

The honor band, which included full group rehearsals, sectionals, and a team building activity, was led by Kevin Makinster, director at Linn-Mar school district. Students performed four songs, which included Guardians of Liberty, Aztec Celebration, Autumn Fanfare, and Bunker Hill Overture.

After the day, a few students shared some highlights from their first honor band experience.

Sixth grade tenor saxophone player Lawson Morris said, “I learned about dynamics and I met some new friends.”

Osky oboe player Anderson Keough said, “We learned how to play with expression, such as forte pianos.”

Tuba player Elliott Adam said, “I learned that I could play for long periods of time and I increased my breath support.”
