John Wesley Doty grew up in What Cheer, Iowa, where he attended the local schools. He entered the Army on Apr. 4, 1962, in Des Moines, Iowa. He was deployed to An Khe and Quin Yon, Vietnam. After two years of service, he reenlisted for a second term and served five years at an Army base in Heidelberg, Germany. After his honorable discharge on Feb. 3, 1970, he and his wife, Susan, who had joined him at the base in Germany, lived in Georgia briefly before returning home to Iowa. John worked at several companies before starting his career at Pella Corporation, where he remained until his retirement in 1999. He then did some transportation work for Ulrich Motors in Pella.
