Operation Backpack Celebrates Another Great Year

United Way of Mahaska County, SIEDA and Salvation Army are pleased to say another year of Operation Backpack has made a huge impact on Mahaska County. With donations from the community and supplies from Stuff the Bus, around 400 backpacks were filled.

We have students from kider-prep to grade 12 receive backpacks that have been packed by volunteers with supplies donated by community members. These backpacks have the supplies the schools requests based on grade, so the students can be confident going into their first day that they have the school supplies they need to have a great year.

Operation Backpack bags go to students not just in Oskaloosa but North Mahaska, Eddyville, and Ottumwa. Helping students be prepared and succeed in school all across Mahaska County is our goal.

Only after all applications for backpacks have been filled, do the extra supplies get distributed between Oskaloosa day cares, pre-schools, elementary, middle and high school. We want all students to have access to the extra supplies to ensure the teachers have one less thing to worry about during the school year.

We want to thank Central United Methodist Church for letting us use their facility, volunteers who put in hours of work and all community members who donated. This year’s success was a group effort and we couldn’t do it without you!
