One Mahaska, Rural Residents for Better Roads disclose financials

OSKALOOSA- Campaign reports for One Mahaska and Rural Residents for Better Roads were filed with the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board late Thursday afternoon. Both organizations involved in next Tuesday’s Local Option Sales Tax vote reported several thousand dollars worth of activity.

One Mahaska, which is advocating for the passage of Local Option Sales Tax in next week’s vote, reported raising $7,570 from 23 donors since its campaign organizational statement was filed on January 6. One Mahaska’s largest individual contributors were Garden & Associates, Mahaska (Mahaska Bottling), MidwestOne Bank, William Penn University, and TD&T CPAs & Advisors, who each donated $1,000. One Mahaska reported spending $3,677.50 in legal fees with BrownWinick, a Des Moines law firm. According to the report, One Mahaska reports having $3,892.50 cash on hand as of April 23. The report does indicate that One Mahaska has unpaid bills to Victory Enterprises, a campaign consulting company based in Davenport, in the amount of$38,993.30. The majority of the fees owed are for consulting services, media production, as well as printing and mailing costs. One Mahaska’s lists Mark Willett, of Clow Valve Company, as the campaign chairperson. Linda Crookham-Hansen, of Musco, is listed as the campaign treasurer.

Rural Residents for Better Roads, which is advocating for the defeat of the Local Option Sales Tax, reported raising $4,850 from 11 donors. The largest individual contribution to Rural Residents for Better Roads was a $2,000 donation from Van Maanen Seed and Chemical Inc. Van Maanen Seed and Chemical is run by Tim Van Maanen, who was the treasurer of TARA Pac, a group which advocated for the election of a slate of city council candidates opposed to the proposed regional airport in 2013. Rural Residents for Better Roads reported spending $4,771.41 in expenditures, with much of the expenditures going to printing of campaign signs, as well as campaign letters and postage. The committee reported having $78.59 cash on hand. Rural Residents for Better Roads lists Mahaska County Supervisor Mike Vander Molen as the committee’s campaign chairman and treasurer.

The Local Option Sales Tax vote will occur next Tuesday. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
