A Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office Press Release

On Friday, December 7, 2018, at approximately 11:00 am members of the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 1400 block of Highway 63, approximately 1 mile south of New Sharon, regarding a single vehicle accident. Upon law enforcement arrival, officials were assisted by citizens in extricating the driver from a 2018 Kenworth dump truck which had rolled in the ditch.

Life-saving measures were administered to the driver of the truck, and he was transported to Mahaska Health Partnership. The driver was later airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines with unknown injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicates that this truck was traveling northbound, on Highway 63, loaded with several tons of gravel. The truck traveled into the southbound lane where it entered the west ditch of the highway. After traveling several hundred feet in the ditch the truck rolled over and landed on its top.

The driver was identified as 68-year-old Donald Keith Wonderlich of Ollie, Iowa. Mr. Wonderlich’s medical condition is unknown at this time.

The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by members of the New Sharon Fire Department, the Mahaska County Dispatch Center, and the Iowa State Patrol.
