Nolie’s Nook – There Are So Many Ways To Show Support

Once again, Oskaloosa Main Street- along with a multitude of businesses, vendors, volunteers, and locals- pulled off a great family day during the Annual Christmas in July event.

Entertainment for 12 hours, children’s games, loads of food and drinks, a silent auction, a splash pad, and a BBQ contest in support of our Emergency Services were all part of the day. It’s easy, especially on days like these, to get busy and buried in all the fun that we forget there are people that did this for us. People that were there hours before we were and hours after. People that have put months of planning and scheduling into it. People who have worked beyond their salary and work hours. It’s easy to get caught up in the smiles on our children’s faces, the smells, the sounds, and the feelings. But we can’t forget that it didn’t just happen. I don’t know who everyone is that’s on the committee or has a hand in planning, but I know Emily and her team need some positive praises.

We often times hear about supporting someone or something and it’s easy to assume that financial support is what is expected. But we are capable of support in so many areas. Some can offer financial support, but it doesn’t end there. We can offer our time to volunteer or even to attend. We can offer praise and encouragement for a job well done. We can spread the word and give rave reviews on the businesses and talents that make our events memorable and enjoyable. Support isn’t only about money. Word of mouth is one of the best things we can do for businesses, positive words are one of the best things we can do for individuals. And those are free to do, as well as only taking seconds of our time. We get stuck in a thinking that if we can’t (or don’t choose to) attend an event or if we can’t purchase items that we can’t do anything. We also get caught in not taking into consideration all the “behind the scenes” of some of our favorite activities. But we need to show support where it’s due- and it’s definitely deserved in our town of Oskaloosa.

There are so many ways to show support, we can’t all do everything. But we can all surely do something. We are halfway through July, but there are still so many events that need some support:
Come out to The Sweet Corn Serenade next week- if you can’t, spread the word with some positivity about the event.
Attend one of the remaining performances by the City Band following Thursdays in the Alley.

This week is our county fair. We have so many children and adults in our community that will show, exhibit, make things, volunteer, enter contests, and put in long hours- take the time to watch some of the events, leave a Queen Contestant an encouraging note, tell the 4-H kid that their exhibit is awesome, thank a judge or event coordinator for their time and work.
Our Indian Softball team is having an amazing season, they have so much talent- but we all know support and positivity from their community adds to a positive mindset and atmosphere going into these games. If you can’t watch, you can still support through so many forms.

We are a community. And community means a group of people living in the same place; but it also means a feeling of fellowship with others as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. We need to choose to make our attitudes, interests, and goals for our community positive.
We don’t have to have the same interests to still encourage others’ (interests). We don’t have to attend every event in order to support it. We don’t have to spend in order to give. But we should be supporting as often as we can, in whatever capacity we are able.

Thank you, Oskaloosa, for all you do- we have a community to be proud of and that is so praise-worthy!

Choose kind. Spread love. Support Oskaloosa.
