Oskaloosa, Iowa – Some teams live by the three-point shot, and die by the three-point shot. On Tuesday night, Newton was plenty alive, as they scored 27 points on nine three-pointers, as they defeated Oskaloosa, 70-57, in Little Hawkeye Conference basketball. The first quarter saw Newton on fire, as senior, Trey Vanderlaan, hit three three-pointers, to propel Newton to a six point lead after one quarter – 20-14. The Indians would battle back, behind Jack Moore, who scored 20 points in the game. Oskaloosa was able to tie the game at halftime, 32 all. While Oskaloosa was able to execute inside, Newton kept bombing away from the outside. The Indians had to feel good about being tied at halftime, despite the hot shooting from the Cardinals.

The second half saw Oskaloosa continue to pound the ball inside. Moore continued to score, but was joined by fellow bigs, Jarad Kruse, Cole Henry, and Xavier Foster. The quarter belonged to Newton though, as they outscored Oskaloosa, 16-12, in the quarter. Oskaloosa actually had control of the game, until an all-too-familiar third quarter dry spell, halfway through the quarter. The fourth quarter is where Newton continued their run, pulling out to a 13 point lead, before winning 70-57. The Cardinals were led by Garrett Sturtz, who had 25 points. Trey Vanderlaan ended up with 19 points, including six three-pointers.

Oskaloosa was led by Moore, who had 20 points in the game, along with three rebounds. Jarad Kruse continued his scoring spree, by adding 17 points, while Cole Henry added 10 points and six rebounds. Xavier Foster had one of his best all-around games of the year, with eight points, and a team high of 11 rebounds.

Oskaloosa drop to 5-2 on the season, and 1-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Newton improve to 5-1, and 2-1 in the conference. Oskaloosa is off until after Christmas break, when they travel to Norwalk on January 6th.
