Newton Girls Edge Oskaloosa 48-46

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa girl’s basketball team fell into a hole early against Newton trailing 12-4 after one quarter. The Indians committed 10 turnovers which helped the Cardinals build the lead. The Indians cleaned up their play in the 2nd quarter outscoring Newton 16-14 in the quarter but more importantly only committing 1 turnover in the quarter. Newton lead at the half 26-20. , the Indians ran off 7 straight points to take a 27-26 lead halfway through the 3rd quarter. That would be the final Oskaloosa lead as Newton Juniors’ Randi Walters and Marcelina Marvelli caught fire from 3-point land and helped Newton extend their 6 point half-time lead to 8 at the end of the 3rd quarter 40-32. Oskaloosa would trail by double digits in the 4th quarter before making a furious comeback aided by poor foul shooting by Newton. The Indians would get it close by the end losing 48-46.

Oskaloosa was once again led by Alexis Westercamp who scored 18 points and pulled down 8 rebounds which gave her a school record in career rebounds with 660. Leigh Van Maanen had her best scoring game of the year with 9 points while Shalandra Shilling and Marleigh Denburger each scored 8. Denburger also pulled down 6 rebounds. The Indians drop to 2-4 while Newton improves to 3-4 on the year. Oskaloosa returns to action Thursday night against DCG in a JV, Varsity double-header starting at 6:15pm.
