Newberry Breaks School Record at Las Vegas Shootout

Las Vegas, Nev.–Briell Newberry (Jr., Holland, Mich., Elementary Education) produced the best single game in program history as the William Penn women’s bowling team had a strong showing at the Las Vegas Collegiate Shoot-Out Wednesday and Thursday.

WPU placed sixth out of 22 teams with 10,336 pins in six regular games and four sets of Bakers. Wichita State (Kan.) was first with 11,708 pins.

Katelyn Hull of Urbana (Ohio) headlined qualifying with a 230.5 average, while Bailey Palmer (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Undecided) topped the Statesmen with a 211.7 to place seventh out of 145 rollers.

Newberry placed just behind Palmer in 10th, doing so with a 209.5 average that included a school-record 298 in the second round.

The remaining three navy and gold members also started all six games with MacKenzie Boyd (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Psychology and Human Services) finishing at 189.2, while Amber Ovel (So., Waterloo, Iowa, Business Management) had a 181.2 clip and Nicole Craft (Fr., Wakefield, Neb., Physical Education) posted a 178.5 average.

William Penn’s JV once again battled only against men’s teams, placing fourth out of six crews with 7,874 pins.

Kaylee Gerken (So., Dubuque, Iowa, Elementary Education) owned a 166.8 clip, while Cybil Lennie (Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Human Services) had an average of 163.0. Lindsey Howard (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Psychology and Sociology) (161.5) and Melinda Garrett (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, General Accounting) (161.3) started all six rounds as well.

Maddison Saner (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa) (139.0, four games) and Rachel Wesely (Fr., Dallas City, Ill., Sociology) (145.0, two games) concluded the WPU action.

Next Up: William Penn is off until January 21-22 when it travels to Addison, Ill. to compete in the Kegel/ISBPA Midwest Collegiate Classic.
