Monarch Rearing Presentation

Iowa State University Extension

Monarch butterfly populations are currently low due to many factors. One way citizen scientists can help populations rise is to rear monarch caterpillars or assist the

monarch caterpillar in reaching the adult stage. The Richardson family reared their first monarch caterpillar following the Iowa State Fair in 2013. They have reared them each year since, rearing over 100 in 2017.

The Mahaska County Master Gardeners will host Minnie Richardson as she explains the monarch rearing process and some of the tips they have learned on August 30 at 6:30 pm at the Mahaska County Extension Auditorium. This event is for all ages who are interested in monarch rearing. This presentation is open to the public and there is no cost to attend. Prior registration is NOT required, but appreciated.

Mahaska County Master Gardeners are celebrating their fifteenth year. The local program organized after the county held their first training. The educational volunteer program, sponsored by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, provides current, research based, home horticulture information and education to the citizens of Iowa through programs and projects. Master Gardeners receive horticulture training, and volunteer to promote a mission of education and service. The program is open to anyone 18 or older with an interest in gardening and a willingness to use their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to make a positive impact on their local community.
