Interment: following the funeral service January 18, 2011 at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell, Iowa
Mary Schulte, 94, of Grinnell died January 13, 2011, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 18, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Nick Adam officiating. Organist will be Marilyn Kriegel. Pallbearers will be Duane Bisson, Pat Gallagher, Virgil Groth, Bill Hansen, Mike Hotchkin, Clark Jensen, Jim Ludden, and Jim White. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary’s Parrish Foundation.
Mary was born on December 23, 1916, in Mitchell, South Dakota, the daughter of Martin and Ellen Moore Healy. She attended school in Emery and Plankinton, South Dakota. She later earned a BA degree at Drake University in Des Moines.
On January 23, 1939, she was united in marriage to Arnold J. Schulte, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Emery, South Dakota. The couple lived in Seattle, Washington and later moved to Grinnell. She was a 3rd grade teacher in the Grinnell School District for 25 years, retiring in 1982.
Mary was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she was active with Partners in Mary and Marion Study Club. She was a life-time member of Iowa State Educational Association and National Educational Association, and a member of the Poweshiek County Retired School Personnel Association. She was a volunteer and auxiliary member at Grinnell Regional Medical Center for many years.
Survivors include her son, James M. Schulte of Gilbertsville, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Heather Durden of Dallas, Georgia and Christopher Schulte of Edwardsville, Illinois; four great-grandchildren, Clair and William Durden and Megan and Simon Schulte; one brother, Joseph Healy of Franklin, Indiana and one sister, Barbara Reiser of Dallas, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arnold; and a sister, Margaret Wise.
