The flag flying over the bandstand during the month of March is in honor of Harry Davis.
He was inducted into the Navy, in 1943, in Ottumwa, Iowa. He received his training at the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, IL, Gulfport, MS, and New Orleans, LA. Harry served as a gunner on three ships in the Pacific Theater during the war, including the Hiram Maxim, a Liberty Ship, and the LSD 636. These ships sailed to numerous locations including the Philippines, Luzon, and New Guinea, and transported ammunition and supplies that opened the way for the Marine Corps and Air Force to conquer the Japanese. Harry was discharged May 16, 1946, and was awarded the American Area Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal, the Philippines Liberation Medal, the Honorable Service Button and Honorable Service Emblem. He also received a letter from the Secretary of the Navy expressing gratitude and pride in Harry’s contributions to the WWII victory and cause of liberty.

Upon his return to Iowa, he went back to Eddyville and went back to farming on the family farm. In 1966 he became a mail carrier, a job he did until 1985. He moved into Oskaloosa in 2004.
