OSKALOOSA, IOWA — As the new school year approaches, the stores are filled with notebooks, bookbags, and other back to school essentials. While it’s important to be physically prepared to go back to school, mental preparedness should also be on your list. The National Mental Health Alliance found one in five young adults live with a mental health condition.

Mahaska Health Partnership (Mahaska) is holding a no-cost Youth Mental Health First Aid class on Friday, August 31, 2018, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Cedar Bluff Learning Center (located by Door 3 of the hospital.)

This Youth Mental Health First Aid class will teach attendees a five-step action plan to offer assistance for those working, living or interacting with young people. Six continuing education units (CEUs) will also be awarded to those in attendance.

“Depression and even suicide are becoming all too common among young people. This is why it is vital, as a parent, teacher, and member of our community to look out for each other,” said Jan LeBahn, Licensed Independent Social Worker and Director of Behavioral Health Services at Mahaska. “Knowing the warning signs and speaking up if you see someone that needs help can make all the difference.”

LeBahn advises parents, adults, and even peers to be aware of the following warning signs:
• A decrease in performance at school.
• Acting out and/or difficulty in concentrating.
• Severe mood swings.
• A change in eating and/or sleeping habits.
• Social withdrawal.
• Excessive fear or worrying.
• Feeling excessively sad or depressed.
• Excessive use of drugs or alcohol.
• Delusions or hallucinations.
• Thoughts of suicide.

“If you suspect someone you know is dealing with mental health symptoms or substance misuse concerns, and are not sure what to do, seek the health of a professional,” said LeBahn. “We are here to support the young people in our community and help them live the best version of themselves.”
