MAHASKA COUNTY – April 19 – 25 is National Volunteer Appreciation Week and Mahaska Health wants to recognize the dedicated volunteers who faithfully donate their time to the health of the community. Each year, more than 140 dedicated volunteers participate in 10,793 hours of volunteer hours at Mahaska Health and Hospice services.

Volunteer Coordinator Kim Langfitt says Mahaska Health is blessed with amazing volunteers. “We are so proud to have so many volunteers who love our community and want to be a part of providing a great experience at Mahaska Health,” she shared. “Patients and staff feel their extraordinary gift of time in a variety of ways and in many different departments.”

President Richard Nixon established National Volunteer Week in 1974 with an executive order as a way to recognize the efforts of volunteers in the U.S. Notably, every sitting president since that time has issued a proclamation during the third week of April to honor volunteers. This week-long event has become a nationwide effort to urge people to get out and volunteer in their own communities.

2020 marks the first time in recent history that Mahaska Health volunteers cannot be found at the hospital during National Volunteer Appreciation Week. As part of proactive measures taken during the beginning stages of the COVID-19 outbreak, volunteers were asked to stay home for their safety. Many continue to support the hospital in other ways – making masks, writing messages of support, and more – and while they aren’t spending time on campus, their efforts are impactful and greatly appreciated.

Langfitt looks forward to the time when the smiling faces of Mahaska Health volunteers may once again be
seen at the hospital, “They are so dedicated and bring so much added happiness and light to our organization.

We look forward to seeing them here again, working alongside us to enhance the health and wellbeing of the
communities we serve.”
