Letter To The Editor: YES, I WOULD PAY A PENNEY FOR THAT!

To the Editor:
As I drive around Mahaska County, and also view information on various social media sites, all I can say is “WOW!” I am absolutely speechless about the proposed Local Option Sales Tax supporting ongoing county and city road improvement, and to build two new facilities: an Environmental Learning Center and an Early Childhood Development and Recreation Center. What a fabulous idea! The way I see it, this is a win-win situation for everyone in Mahaska County.
I had the pleasure of being a Physical Education Teacher in the Oskaloosa School District for 29 years, also coaching volleyball for 18 years. In, 2014, I chose to retire and stay in Oskaloosa.
Since retiring, I have become a very active member at the Mahaska YMCA with my new found “love” of the pool. Yes, this retiree enjoys lap swimming and also is a frequent attendee of the water aerobics classes. Swimming is an outstanding activity for people of all ages. In these classes, there are people from New Sharon, Leighton, and Oskaloosa and we are “all” from Mahaska County. We all work as a “team” in these classes helping each other enjoy a low impact activity.
This type of physical activity is so beneficial to my health, that if, the Mahaska YMCA were to close, it could be a deciding factor as for me to relocate!
The Mahaska County Community needs to keep the needs of young families and retirees in as a promising place. Obviously, I like it here and would love to see others choose it as their “home.” An early childhood development facility would allow children to thrive and attract places for their families to recreate year-round. Many other communities already serve these needs, and it is my opinion, that we need the above-mentioned things in order for our community to flourish.
Kudos, to the people that helped initiate this plan. I truly hope to see this measure pass and I encourage you to think about the future and how you can help Mahaska County progress for years to come! Vote “Yes For Roads!” and “Yes for Families” on May 3!
