To the Editor,

I am writing this letter to encourage Mahaska County residents to vote for Supervisor Henry W. (Willie) Van Weelden on June 5. Experience matters. And Willie has a proven track record of serving Mahaska County well, always recognizing that he serves the rural residents. But Willie knows that he serves our city and small town residents as well, and his voting record demonstrates that understanding.

It was my honor to serve with Willie for a time. I saw a man who was a good listener, an essential trait for one to serve the public well. I saw a man who weighed the pros and cons of each issue before making a decision. I saw a man who was a good steward of taxpayer money. I saw a man who always displayed a pleasant demeanor, even when treated unfairly. I saw a man who faithfully attended the meetings of the boards and commissions on which he served, something that can’t be said of others on the Board of Supervisors. In short, I saw a good man who took his job seriously.

Elections usually hinge on one or two key issues, and this election is no different. The airport matter continues to draw a lot of attention as we all expect. My greatest disappointment in this discussion is the many false statements that continue to circulate. Just to mention one, it’s being said that if the airport struggles financially that the burden will fall on rural Mahaska County residents. That is not true. The 28E agreement expressly excludes the county from any financial liability for both the construction and the operation of the airport.

Another matter is the radio equipment investment for Mahaska County, another example of an issue that has become heated at times. But I think that’s okay. That means people are paying attention to an important matter, and people are involved. And when the dust settles I trust that the supervisors will make an informed decision based on cost and performance. Those are the times I want Willie Van Weelden listening, thinking and spending our resources wisely.

Please take the time to vote in the June 5 primary. And vote for Willie.
