LaVerne Race, 54, of Oskaloosa, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at the Mahaska Health Hospice Serenity House.
LaVerne “Butch” Earnest Race, son of LaVerne David Waterfall and Mary (Lou Phipps) McBride, was born November 11, 1969, in Rock Island, Illinois.

The family lived in Rock Island until he was a teenager when they moved to Oskaloosa. He was a 1988 graduate of Oskaloosa High School.

LaVerne worked for Easter’s Super Value Foods and later as a Shopper delivery man for the Oskaloosa Herald.

He enjoyed texting friends, watching movies, and car rides in his spare time. LaVerne’s friends, cats, and dogs brought him much joy.

His family includes his sisters, Marlene Waterfall and Elizabeth Race, both of Illinois; his girlfriend, Dawn Cook; a cousin, John Williams, both of Oskaloosa; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

As was his wish, LaVerne’s body has been cremated. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
Memorials can be given to his family.
