KNOXVILLE, IOWA MAN SENTENCED FOR POSSESSION OF STOLEN FIREARMS

DES MOINES, IA – On January 28, 2011, Brady Austin Rogers, 26, of Knoxville, Iowa was sentenced to 68 months in federal prison for possession of a stolen firearm and failure to register as a sex offender, announced United States Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt. The Honorable Judge Ronald E. Longstaff also ordered Rogers to serve five years of supervised release following his release from prison.

Rogers was arrested in Knoxville, Iowa, on April 26, 2010, after he was found in possession of a stolen Savage high-power rifle, caliber .270, and ammunition. It was then discovered that Rogers was an unregistered sex offender, arising from a conviction for felony sexual assault from 2004 in the State of Arkansas.

Before traveling to Iowa, Rogers was residing in the State of Alabama, where he also was not in compliance with the sex offender registry requirements. A warrant was issued for his arrest in Alabama, and he traveled from Alabama to Iowa in February 2010, after being featured on “Alabama’s Most Wanted.” A person who travels in interstate commerce and fails to comply with the relevant sex offender registration requirements is subject to federal prosecution under the criminal provisions of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA).

This case was investigated by the Knoxville, Iowa, Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), and the United States Marshals Service, which investigates SORNA violations in cooperation with the Iowa Sex Offender Registry and local law enforcement agencies.
