Oskaloosa, Iowa | Age 93

Klasina “Katie” Hendrika (DeJong) Sterk of Oskaloosa went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 13, 2016, after a brief stay at Bickford Assisted Living in Mission, KS. She recently celebrated her 93rd birthday with three grandchildren and one great grandchild, which brought her great joy. She was born in rural Monroe County, Iowa, on June 24, 1923, to Frans and Watrina DeJong.

After leaving home Katie worked as a nurse’s aide at Mercy Hospital in Oskaloosa until she married Albert Sterk on January 28, 1949, in the same house in which she was born.

Katie and Albert farmed near Albia, IA, for about 25 years before moving to Oskaloosa in 1977. After raising their two boys, she worked in nursing homes in Albia and Oskaloosa until she retired past the age of many of the residents.

Katie was known for working hard, providing loving care to others and feeding people. She always offered food to anyone who stopped by for a visit, from the paper boy to grandkids to fellow church members.

Katie was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa for more than 60 years.

Katie is survived by her two sons: Alvin of Stanton, NE, and Ronald (& Catherine) of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren: Jonathan (& Heather) of Paola, KS, Rebekah (& Travis) Gordon of Nashville, TN, Emily of Whitman, MA, and Rebecca Hendricks of Brooklyn, IA; six great grand children; numerous nieces and nephews, their children and their children’s children.

Katie was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; all six siblings; a daughter-in-law, Charlotte; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 17.
Funeral services will be at First Christian Reformed Church at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 18.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to Pacific Island Ministries in care of First Christian Reformed Church.
