Judy DeVore, 76, of Oskaloosa died Thursday, August 3, 2023, at Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo. She was born June 12, 1947, in Morrison, Illinois, the daughter of Esther Smith.
While in school Judy held jobs at Jean’s A&W and was a Candy Striper at the Mahaska County Hospital.
Judy graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1965.
Following graduation Judy worked as a CNA at Camair Nursing Home in Oskaloosa, it is there that she found her passion for caring for people.
On June 12, 1969, she was united in marriage to Larry DeVore at the Union Mills Church.
Following their marriage Judy continued serving as a nurse. She worked at the Mahaska Hospital, several nursing homes in Oskaloosa, Mahaska Diamond Shelter, and prior to her retirement in the late 1990’s she was doing private in-home health care.
Judy enjoyed volunteering at the Ecumenical Cupboard as well as the Oskaloosa Public Library. She was selfless in all she did throughout her life: a helper for Larry, caring for her children, making meals for neighbors and friends, or just being there for people in need.
Judy enjoyed time at Lake Ponderosa on boat rides, relaxing in the swing with a good book, snuggling babies, tending to her plants and flowers, and time spent with friends and family.
Her family includes her husband of over 54 years, Larry DeVore of Oskaloosa; two children, Bob DeVore of Sully and Brenda (& Matt) Coffin of Fairbank; two grandsons, Jacob Coffin and Silas Coffin; her twin sister, Jane (& Daryl) Cox of Knoxville; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, two aunts, Erma Smith and Mabel Smith; and an uncle, Lloyd Smith.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 10, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Central Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Del Bittner officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Wednesday after 2 p.m. at Central Church in Oskaloosa. The family will be at the church from 5-7 Wednesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa Public Library.
