John D. Mortensen

SSG (Retired) John D. Mortensen, 76, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2025 in Chattanooga.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2025 at First Baptist Church in Chattanooga at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Jamie Powell officiating.

Burial with full military honors will follow in Chattanooga Cemetery under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.

The service may be viewed on the First Baptist Church Chattanooga website.

John was born in Spirit Lake, Iowa to Anna (Hotchkins) Mortensen and Dale Mortensen. He grew up in Grinnell, Iowa with his siblings, Kenneth Mortensen, Richard Mortensen, Daniel Mortensen and Susan (Mortensen) Forbes. He graduated from Grinnell High School in 1967. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1969 and served twenty-one years. John served in Desert Storm and had a few duty stations internationally. John married Carol (Kovach) on June 21, 1996 at Chattanooga First Baptist Church. He retired from the U.S. Army in October 1996. He joined Lawton Public Schools as a custodian and later retired from LPS as well.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife.

He is survived by his siblings, step-children, Kimberly (Mortensen) Bergey, Amanda (Moser) Miller and Walter Moser, Jr., many step-grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
