Indians Smash Chariton 69-37 in season final

Chariton, Iowa – A 32-point win over a second place South Central Conference team that came in at 14-6 sure feels good.

Oskaloosa has been on the receiving end of these beatings for the last few years, so paying back a team that had administered some of those huge losses made it even sweeter.

This was the fifth team Oskaloosa has faced from the South Central Conference. Their record is 5-0 against the top five teams with an average margin of victory just under 20 points. Spencer Tucker stepped off the bus on fire in this one. The junior guard dropped six three-pointers, many of them from about 23 feet away, on the way to a game high of 20 points.

Once again Oskaloosa jumped out quickly, leading 11-2 after just a few minutes. The Indians’ standout defender, Tanner DeKock, was once again up to his old tricks. The junior was assigned the Chargers’ 6’3 leading scorer, Lim Chuol, who averages 17 points a game. DeKock was able to draw two quick charges on Chuol which limited his effectiveness and helped set the tone for an Oskaloosa defense that is playing very well here at the end of the year. The Indians never looked back and rolled to the 32-point win.

Oskaloosa is playing its best basketball of the year and has won five of their last six games. The Indians also notched their 13th win of the season, which equals the 2010-2011 season.

Tucker led the Indians with 20 points, while junior Jarad Kruse and freshman Xavier Foster each had 10 points.

Foster and sophomore Cole Henry excited the Oskaloosa crowd with a sensational fast break dunk. The 6’7 Henry took off with a defensive rebound, dribbling down court and flipped an underhand pass to Foster on the right side of the lane. Foster elevated from about six feet away and threw down a thunderous one-handed dunk on top of a Chariton player who fouled him. The dunk immediately started making the rounds on Twitter and is also on YouTube.

Jack Moore scored nine points and Rian Yates added six points. Javon Harris, Tucker Nunnikhoven and Henry each scored four points. Henry also had a big night on the boards with 12 rebounds. Nick Harrington rounded out the scoring with two points.

Oskaloosa ends the regular season at 13-8 overall and 6-8 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. Chariton ends the season at 14-7 overall and 2nd in the South Central Conference behind Knoxville at 9-3.

The Indians start district play Monday night after the Knoxville vs Fairfield game in Oskaloosa. Game time should be around 7:30 p.m. Let’s pack the gym as the Indians start their run toward a state tournament berth.
