Indian Swimmers Compete At Decorah

The Oskaloosa Indian swim team met at the high school at 5:00 am in order to make it to the conference swim meet that was held in Decorah. After the long drive and then go through all the warm-ups they were ready to compete against Decorah, Boone, Grinnell-BGM, NCMP, Vinton-Shellsburg, and Williamsburg.

The first race of the day was the 200 Medley Relay, and Oskaloosa sent the team of Owen Gordon, Colin Fiechtner, Carson Breon and Jarod Miller to the blocks and they finished in a time of 1:51.17 and earned the 4th place finish and the first trip to the podium.

In the 200-Yard Freestyle event, Oskaloosa sent a pair of freshmen to compete against the field. Landon Hunolt was the top finisher for the Indians as he earned a 14th place finish in a time of 2:26.39 and Keygan Roberts finished in a time of 2:28.53.

In the 50 Free race, Oskaloosa was able to place 3 swimmers in this event. Trae Jarvis swam a personal best in a time of 35.43, Lucca Claro finished in a time of 30.97 and Colin Fiechtner was the top finisher for Osky as he earned a 10th place finish in a time of 25.33.

Next race on the list was the 100 Yard Free, and Osky sent 3 swimmers to compete against the field. Trae Jarvis took 7 seconds off his previous personal best time to finish with a time of 1:16.93. Jarod finished in a time of 53.74 for a 6th place finish, and Carson Breon finished in a time 52.84 to take home the fourth-place finish as both were able to take a place on the podium.

Up next was the 500 Free and Oskaloosa sent Owen Gordon to challenge the field. Owen swam a time of 5:29.40 and earned a fifth-place finish and a trip to the podium.

In the 200 Free Relay Oskaloosa was able to send 2 relay teams. The first team to swim to compete was Hunolt, Claro, Jarvis, and Roberts as they finished in a time of 2:01.63. The second team of Breon, Fiechtner, Miller, and Gordon earned a trip to the podium as they finished fourth in a time of 1:38.79.

In the 100 Yard Backstroke Event, Keygan Roberts finished in a time of 1:14.88 and tied another swimmer for the 14th place finish.
The last race for the Indians was the 400-Yard Free Relay as Osky again was able to send 2 teams to compete against the conference. The team of Hunolt, Claro, Jarvis, and Roberts was able to finish in a time of 4:46.51 for the 12th place finish. The team of Miller, Fiechtner, Gordon, and Breon finished in a time of 3:42.25 and earned a third-place finish and a trip to the podium.

After the races were completed, they awarded all of the swimmers that had earned the Academic All-Conference honors. Jarod Miller was the lone recipient for the Indians this year.

Next up for the Indians is the Regional meet at Indianola on Saturday, February 2nd, as they will be shooting for their best times and a chance to qualify for state. For swimmers, they need to have one of the top 24 times on this day across the entire state as there is not any big school and small school classifications.
