Howard Scores as Grinnell Women Tie Saint Mary’s 1-1
GRINNELL — Rylee Howard answered an early Saint Mary’s goal, but Grinnell could not find the winner despite a second-half push in a 1-1 women’s soccer tie Sunday, Sept. 6, at Springer Field.
Grinnell finished with a 10-5 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. The result moved Grinnell to 0-1-1, while Saint Mary’s of Minnesota moved to 1-0-1.
Both goals came in the opening nine minutes.
Hannah Bradley put Saint Mary’s ahead at the 5:40 mark with an unassisted goal. Howard responded just 2 minutes, 53 seconds later, scoring off an assist from Teya Lochridge to tie the match at 8:33. It was Howard’s first goal of the season.
Grinnell held a 5-2 advantage in first-half shots. Howard had another attempt stopped by Saint Mary’s goalkeeper Payton Bremer at 20:11, and the teams went into halftime tied.
Grinnell put all five of its second-half shots on goal, but Saint Mary’s kept the score even.
Bremer stopped Lochridge at 47:39 and Sarah Travis at 55:11. Saint Mary’s was then credited with a team save on an attempt by Elsa Nielsen at 70:52.
Grinnell had two more opportunities in the closing minutes. Lochridge’s shot at 82:50 was saved, and Bremer turned away Howard’s attempt at 85:47 to preserve the tie.
At the other end, Grinnell goalkeeper Peyton Dixon made two second-half saves, both against Bradley. Dixon stopped shots at 50:37 and 79:18 and played all 90 minutes.
Howard led Grinnell with four shots, including three on goal. Lochridge added three shots, two on goal, along with the assist. Travis and Nielsen each placed their lone shot on target, while Caroline Novak added one shot.
Bradley accounted for all three of Saint Mary’s shots on goal, finishing with one goal and two attempts saved by Dixon.
Bremer finished with five saves in 90 minutes. Saint Mary’s also received the separate team save on Nielsen’s shot, giving the visitors six saves overall.
Saint Mary’s held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Grinnell was called for 10 fouls to seven for Saint Mary’s, and neither team received a yellow or red card.
The match drew 115 spectators.
