Harris Claims Title At Drake Relays

The Drake Relays are one of the most historic track and field events in the nation, and Oskaloosa has it’s first male Drake Relays Champion in J’Von Harris.

J’Von cleared 6′ 9″ to leap past the remaining four jumpers to win the Drake Relays High School division high jump.

Jack Moore also competed in the High Jump competition tonight for our Indians, also with an outstanding performance. Jack jumped to a new PR best at 6′ 5″, which earned him 8th place at the Drake Relays.

“Be sure to congratulate Jack on this fantastic accomplishment”, said Oskaloosa Boys Track and Field Head Coach Mike Sterner.

“Our young men battled in some very ugly conditions Friday while competing in the Drake Relays. Fresh off his Drake Relays championship, J’Von Harris was back competing in the long jum. The mid 30’s rainy weather made for some tough competition for all, along with some untimely breaks especially for J’Von. In his three attempts he scratched his first two, which if not over the line would certainly have put him in the mix for another relays victory. He was swiftly pulled away to start the Distance Medley Relay, then pulled back within ten minutes fresh off running 200 meters to get some kind of final jump in. He was not able to get his legs under himself and simply could not get a quality jump in in such a limited amount of time,” said Sterner

The Distance Medley Relay team of Harris, Andy Sterner, Bennett Spry, and Carter Huyser ran well in the tough elements in the second of three heats, finishing one ahead of where they came in seeded in the heat.

The final event for the Indians at the 2017 Drake Relays was the prelims of the 4×100 relay with the team of Harris, Casey Hill, Tyler Miller, and Spry. The group failed to get the baton around the blue oval and did not finish.

We are proud of our young men for qualifying for the legendary Relays in multiple events and now we look forward to sprinting through the finish, as the next two weeks will bring us to the State Qualifying District meet in Pella on May 11.

The Indians will be back in action competing in the LHC co-ed track & field championships this coming Tuesday, May 2nd, in Grinnell.
