GRINNELL’S BURNELL, CANADY AND FIGGE NAMED TO D-III CROSS COUNTRY ALL-ACADEMIC SQUAD

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College cross country runners Sarah Burnell ’14, Frank Canady ’14 and Erik Figge ’13 have been named to the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s All-Academic Team released by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Burnell, from Grinnell, Iowa (Grinnell), became the first Pioneer woman since 2007 to win a Midwest Conference individual title during the 2012 campaign. A three-time All-MWC performer and All-Region runner, Burnell qualified for the 2012 NCAA D-III National Championships. She has the second-fastest 6-kilometer time in program history.
Canady, from Iowa City, Iowa (West), claimed the MWC individual men’s title in 2012 while leading the Pioneers to the team crown. He has earned All-MWC honors three times and been All-Region twice while advancing to the 2012 NCAA D-III National Championships.
Figge, from San Diego, Calif. (Patrick Henry), placed fourth in the 2012 MWC Championships. He is a three-time All-MWC runner and two-time All-Region honoree. Canady and Figge rank 15th and 18th, respectively, on the Pioneers’ all-time 8-kilometer chart.
A total of 363 student-athletes, 201 on the women’s side and 162 men, made the D-III All-Academic Team. To qualify, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most-recent semester and placed in the top 35 at the NCAA Regional Championships.
