Marvin “Glen” Coplen, 82, of Oskaloosa and formerly of rural Eddyville, died Sunday, February 28, 2016, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born February 6, 1934, at Cotter, Arkansas, the son of William Marshall and Nora Lockwood Coplen.

He attended school in Cotter, Arkansas. Early on he worked at a gas station in Arkansas. He then enlisted in the United States Army. He served from November of 1953 to November of 1955 when he was honorably discharged.

Following his discharge from the Army, he worked various jobs and continued to work his way north until he got to Eddyville. It was while working in Eddyville that he met the love of his life Shirley Hall. The two of them were married on October 5, 1958, at Christianberg, Iowa. In the early 1960’s, Glen went to work at Iowa Valve (now Clow Valve) in Oskaloosa. He worked there for 18 years before his retirement. In retirement he worked as a security guard at William Penn College. Glen and Shirley also worked together for over 13 years caring for many foster children.

Glen and Shirley lived on an acreage near Eddyville, where Glenn enjoyed raising livestock for many years. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church and attended the Open Bible Church in Oskaloosa. Glen will be remembered as a Godly Man, serving the Lord any way that he could. He was also a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

His family includes his wife of over 57 years, Shirley Coplen of Oskaloosa; a son and his wife, Marshall (& Peggy) Coplen of Lawrence, Kansas; a daughter, Sheena Coplen of Mississippi; five grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and three brothers.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 3, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. in the Open Bible Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Dwayne Poe officiating.
Military Rites will be given by the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W.
Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery at Eddyville. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Wednesday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Wednesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the MHP Hospice Serenity House.
