Gary DeGoey
Gary, son of Willus “Bill” Wayne and Alberta Marie (Woolsey) DeGoey diedWednesday, May 15, 2024, at the MHP Serenity Hospice House in Oskaloosa. He was born
August 5, 1957, in Oskaloosa. He graduated from North Mahaska High School with the Class of
1975.
Gary’s life was blessed with a beautiful union when he married Cindy Green on April 25, 1998
at the Lacey United Methodist Church. Their marriage was a celebration of love, commitment,
and the beginning of a new family.
Gary started out farming with his dad and Verlan Uitermarkt. In 1988, he began farming with
Kenneth Walston. He believed in being a good steward of the land and implemented many new
farming practices over the years to ensure years of productivity. Gary enjoyed driving semi, not
only his own, but he also drove for several other trucking companies for several years.
Gary’s life was lived firmly with the principles he was raised on: faith, family and community
service. Gary served various roles in the Lacey Church, served on the North Mahaska FFA
Advisory Board, Taintor Coop Board, Mahaska County FSA County Committee and 43 Years on
the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Posse.
Gary is survived by his wife of over 26 years, Cindy DeGoey of rural New Sharon; 2 daughters,
Erica (Randy) Hemsley of Sigourney and Erin DeGoey of Oskaloosa; 2 sons, Kevin DeGoey of
Omaha, Nebraska and Dustin (Ashlee) Snakenberg of Fremont; 6 grandchildren, Kale Hemsley,
Brookelyn Hemsley, Maysen Brunt, Chanan Snakenberg, Tinlee Snakenberg and Moshé
DeGoey; and two sisters, Diane (Mike) Moothart of New Sharon and Luanne (Roberto) Azcui of
Algonquin, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willus and Alberta DeGoey; parents-in-law, Roy and
Betty Green; maternal and paternal grandparents; brothers-in-law, Gary McKay, Tom Macha
and Rick Smith.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 , at 10:30 a.m. in the Lacey Methodist
Church in Lacey, Iowa, with Reverend Frosty Van Voorst officiating. Luncheon will follow service
at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Burial services at Evergreen Cemetery
near Leighton, Iowa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be
held on Monday, May 20, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Bates Funeral Chapel in
Oskaloosa with Gary’s family present throughout the evening to greet relatives and friends. No
open visitation. Guest book will be available to sign prior to visitation. Memorials may be made
to the family and will be divided among Gary’s favorite charities.
