PELLA— An 8-1 victory over Buena Vista University gave the Central College men’s tennis team its first Iowa Conference triumph of the 2018 season Saturday afternoon.

The Dutch lost to Coe College (16-4, 4-0 IIAC) 8-1 in the first match, but Ferrell was enthusiastic about Garret Taylor (senior, Creston) and William Isiminger’s (freshman, North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS) 8-4 triumph at No. 1 doubles.

“They played the smartest tennis I’ve ever seen them play,” coach Ryun Ferrell said. “We got one break and that’s all it took as both teams kept holding serves after the one break. They really stayed within themselves and found Coe’s weak spots.

“Coe is still a great team. We took a step in the right direction as a program hanging with the No. 32 team in the country.”

Against the Beavers (5-6, 0-3 IIAC), Ferrell cited Danny Anderson’s (sophomore, Boone) 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 win at No. 2 singles as something he was pleased with.

“Danny came out of the gates really fast, cooled off and then still found a way to win,” Ferrell said. “You always get excited for those kinds of matches where it ebbs and flow through the match and your player gets competitive and finds a way to win.”

Colin Jones (junior, Pella) blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles against Buena Vista.

“Colin’s playing well lately and has stepped up this spring,” Ferrell said. “I’ve been proud to see him play at the level he’s at right now.”

Kris Weeden (junior, Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS), Jackson Lewton (junior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) and Jacob Keller (freshman, Olathe, Kan., South HS) also picked up singles wins for the Dutch at 3, 4 and 5, respectively.

Another big Iowa Conference dual is on tap for next Thursday when Central welcomes Simpson College to town for a 4 p.m. match at A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex.
