Final prep for conference track complete for Dutch women

PELLA — The Central College women’s track and field team completed its indoor regular season Saturday afternoon in a triangular against Buena Vista University and Loras College.

Loras College won the team title with 111 points as Central finished second with 80. Buena Vista rounded it out with 72.

Central won six total events, including the 400-meter dash thanks to Hadyn Miller’s (freshman, Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS) winning time of 1:01.31

“Hadyn is finally making a breakthrough and feeling good,” Sturman said. “I think part of it is that she’s really getting into the training after missing some of the fall because of volleyball. She’s pumped and feeling good and we’re hopeful of what could happen at conference next week.”

Holly Forrester (senior, Mahattan, Kan., Rock Creek HS) won the long jump (16-8.75) with Kasey Pelzer (freshman, Pleasantville) in second (15-11.5). Yuan Bank (senior, Littleton, Colo., Heritage HS) had the best triple jump (30-7). Pole vaulter Cali Coffman (Leawood, Kan., Blue Valley HS) matched her season-best mark to clear 9-6.25 in a winning effort.

“Holly’s been so consistent,” Sturman said. “Every jump is over five meters. It’s been her theme all season with both the long jump and triple jump.”

Mari Stein (sophomore, Okoboji) won the 800-meter run (2:20.82) and ran the second leg of the winning 4×400-meter relay team (4:14.38). She was joined by freshmen Abbi Roerdink (Tiffin, Ohio, Hopewell-Loudon HS), Elsie Thoreson (Pella) and Alyssa Mayhew (North Aurora, Ill., West Aurora HS).

Central also got second-place efforts in the mile run from Caroline McMartin (freshman, Pella), in the 3,000-meter run Hailey Hill (sophomore, Las Vegas, Nev., West Career and Technical Academy) and in the 5,000-meter run from Rayanne Dally (junior, Des Moines, Roosevelt HS).

Central is headed to the American Rivers Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships next Saturday at 10 a.m. in Waverly.

“We’ve been seeing our conference opponents each week with these triangular meets,” Sturman said. “Maybe it’s a little more motivating because we know what we can do against them. We’re excited to see what happens and hopefully we can reach our goals.”
