Esther Mae passed away Thursday morning at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa at the age of 96 years and 4 days of age.

Esther Mae Hanson, daughter of William Fourth and Anna Mae Cuddy Kindig, was born, February 10, 1917, near Montgomery City, Missouri. Esther Mae’s mother passed away when she was a very young child; as a result she went to live with her uncle and aunt, Frank E. and Gail Reynolds Kindig, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was later adopted by them. Esther Mae attended Oskaloosa Schools and then received her degree in Elementary Education from William Penn College. She went on to Drake University where she studied for her master’s degree. Esther Mae married C. Richard Hanson in June 1948. They made their home in Oskaloosa and Esther Mae first taught in Farson, Iowa. She later taught in Hedrick and University Park. While her son was young, Esther Mae remained at home, but later returned to teaching at Jefferson and Webster Schools, retiring in 1981. Esther Mae’s passion was teaching and she loved children and young people. Esther Mae was a member of the Gateway Church of the Nazarene and a 63 year member of King’s Daughters. She opened her home to all people and loved to serve the Lord. She gave her heart to the Lord as a young child and followed him all her life.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Brian K. and Cheryl Hanson of Franklin, TN; three grandchildren: Amanda Suzanne, Matthew Ryan and Christina Marie Hanson; two great-grandchildren: Lily Beloved and Eleanor Love Reid; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Esther Mae was preceded in death by six brothers, two half-brothers and a half-sister.

Visitation: will begin after 10 a.m., Monday morning February 18, 2013 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel. The family will be present from 5 – 7 p.m. to greet visitors.
Funeral Service: 11 a.m., Tuesday morning February 19, 2013 at Gateway Church of the Nazarene with Pastor David Childers and Reverend Cyril McKay officiating.
Interment: Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family. A memorial will be designated at a later time, please made checks payable to Brian Hanson.
