“Engaging New Voices” Is Theme For Sexual Assault Awareness Month

The Oskaloosa Bandstand was lit up in teal to recognized Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and this year’s theme, “Engaging New Voices,” recognizes that ending abuse is everyone’s business; men and women, old and young. We know that 1 in 5 women and 1 in 33 men experience sexual abuse in their lifetime. We must take a stand.

Crisis Intervention Services is partnering with communities in our service area this month to spread awareness about sexual abuse. Everyone understands that sexual violence impacts victims and their families, but the effects of this violent crime on communities and society are less obvious. When sexual violence happens, it creates a climate of fear, anger, and mistrust in our communities. Sexual violence generates criminal justice, medical, and crisis service expenses. Perhaps most damaging are the lost contributions of survivors, who have difficulty getting back to school, work, and their families.

To prevent sexual violence, individuals must model healthy relationships and communication, intervene in bad situations, and challenge harmful attitudes. We must believe survivors when they tell us about their experiences.

Crisis Intervention Services (CIS) works every day with schools, faith communities, and workplaces that have dedicated their time and energy to help prevent violence. We would like to thank Musco Lighting and the City of Oskaloosa for allowing us to light the square teal this month in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. In addition to the lighting, CIS wrapped teal ribbons around trees and placed signs in the square to bring awareness to this difficult topic. Our actions, big and small, have a ripple effect in our communities. Please join us in taking a stand against violence.
