Elmore’s ‘A’ Standard Headlines Strong Showing at Sol Butler Classic

Dubuque–The William Penn indoor track and field teams returned from holiday break with a solid effort Saturday as they competed at the Sol Butler Classic hosted by Dubuque.

The men finished fifth out of 10 teams with 40 points, while host Dubuque was first with 155 points. On the women’s side, WPU took eighth out of 10 squads with 23 points; Loras topped the standings with 137.5 points.

Tristen Elmore (So., Ovied, Fla., Physical Education), who entered having already qualified in the high jump, bettered his mark Saturday. He won the event with an automatic standard of 6-9.

The sophomore was also third in the 200-meter dash in 22.79 seconds and fifth in the 55-meter dash in 6.66 seconds (6.61 in the prelims).

Derek Robinson (Sr., Jenks, Okla., Communications) and Michael Hubbard (Jr., Gary, Ind., Exercise Science) joined Elmore by claiming multiple top-10 showings. Robinson was sixth in the weight throw at 53-9 and seventh in the shot put at 44-8.75, while Hubbard was eighth in the 55 (6.77) and 10th in the 200 (23.50).

Mofiyinfoluwa Alade (Fr., Hoffman Estates, Ill.) was also a top-10 high jumper Saturday, taking fifth at 6-3.25, while Seth Davis (So., Farmerville, Texas) had a long jump of 21-8 that helped him to sixth overall.

Hurdlers Brenden Foster (So., Rock Hill, S.C.) (6th, 8.21) and Andrew Leverette (Fr., Fort Worth, Texas) (10th, 8.51) placed high in the 55-meter event, while Sage Ehresman (So., Sully, Iowa, Exercise Science) was eighth in the shot put at 44-0.

Asia Laudermilch (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Physical Education) headlined WPU’s female competitors as a two-time point-scorer in the sprints; she was fourth in the 200 (27.56) and fifth in the 55 (7.51).

Shelbie Williams (So., Hedrick, Iowa, Elementary Education) was William Penn’s highest finisher, ending up in the runner-up spot in the shot put at 41-10.75, while Elayna VanArsdale (So., Bensalem, Pa., Secondary Education) placed fifth in the weight throw at 47-9.

“I was impressed with the efforts from both our men and women,” Head Coach Allen Friesen said. “For our first meet after the break and only having a week to prepare, our athletes came back in pretty good shape and had some solid performances. This is definitely something we can build upon and will propel us the rest of the year.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Waverly next Saturday to compete in the Chelsey Henkenius Open hosted by Wartburg.
