PLATTEVILLE, WIS.— A rapid start by the Pioneers from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville created a mountain the Central College men’s soccer team couldn’t climb in a 3-0 loss Friday afternoon.

It was the season opener for both programs as the Dutch fall to 0-1 on the season.

Pioneer striker Logan Rinderknecht put three goals into the net before 18 minutes had expired from the contest, including his first tally 48 seconds into the contest.

“That was the game right there wasn’t it?” coach Garry Laidlaw said. “We didn’t get ourselves started on time and when you do that against a good team, they’ll make you pay.”

According to Laidlaw, the Dutch improved throughout the full 90 minutes, but couldn’t get cut into the Pioneers lead.

“The score line is a little bit harsh on us,” he said. “We had some good spells of possession and created some good chances. But when you fall behind that early against a quality side, it’s always going to be tough.”

Central did manage to fire off 12 shots, putting four on frame. Midfielders Miguel Pina (senior, Chicago, Ill., Taft HS) and Nathan Casas (freshman, Cottage Grove, Minn., East Ridge HS) each attempted three shots and were credited for one being on goal.

“Nathan is doing well as a young player for us and Miguel is serving as a good mentor for him,” Laidlaw said. “Nathan can have an excellent career here.”

Goalkeeper Salvador Salado-Herrera (sophomore, Minneapolis, Minn., Park Center HS) took the loss, but bagged six saves.

There’s no rest for the weary as Central welcomes Iowa Wesleyan University for a 5 p.m. match Saturday that will serve as the home opener.

“We need to have a short memory,” Laidlaw said. “We don’t feel like playing back-to-back will be a big issue because we have some good depth. We’ll just need to make sure we walk and talk through the errors that lead to the goals. Otherwise, I felt like we played a decent game.”
