Oskaloosa, Iowa | Age 67

Dr. Steven Allen Shoup, 67, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at the MHP
Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born April 23, 1955, in LaPorte, Indiana, the son of
Owen and Eleanor Davidhizar Shoup.

Steve graduated from Penn High School with the class of 1973. Following high school he continued his education at Indiana University, where he was a member of the Indiana Marching Hundred and played in the basketball pep band. He especially enjoyed playing in the pep band in 1975-1976, when the Hoosiers went undefeated, likely due to Steve’s presence in the
band. In addition to being a member of the band, he also earned a BA in Chemistry in 1977. He went on to complete his Doctor of Optometry at Indiana University in 1981.

On May 4, 1980, he was united in marriage to Cynthia Pea in Connersville, Indiana. To this union two children were born, David and Rosanna.

Dr. Shoup was honored to serve in the Mt. Pleasant and Oskaloosa Communities for over 40 years. He valued the trust of his patients and the friendships he developed throughout his career. He also cherished the 30 years at Central Vision Center practicing optometry side-by-side with his wife Dr. Cindy. In 2020, the two decided it was time to try retirement.

Steve was an active member of the College Avenue Friends Church in Oskaloosa where he enjoyed playing the bass guitar in the praise and worship band. He was a lifelong member of the American Optometric Association and the Iowa Optometric Association.

Steve shared his passion for service to others and his faith in the Lord on mission trips to Appalachia, Jamaica, and Belize. He also participated in eye care missions through the Volunteer Optometric Service to Humanity (VOSH) trips to Argentina and Mexico.

Steve was a lifelong bicyclist. This started at the age of 16 when he rode from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, to Harrisburg, Virginia with the group “Outspoken.” From that time, he had a hobby of cycling. Steve completed 21 RAGBRAI rides and on May 26, 2022, he rode 15 miles of the Hiawatha trail on the border of Idaho and Montana with his daughter and granddaughter. Steve also treasured the countless miles ridden with family and friends throughout the years.

His family includes his wife Dr. Cynthia Shoup of Oskaloosa; two children and their spouses, David and Abby Shoup of Des Moines, and Dr. Rosanna and Derrick Bailey of Helena, Montana; three grandchildren, Liam Shoup, Jane Bailey, and Gavin Bailey; and a grand dog, Taffy Shoup.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother Michael.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 10:30 AM in the College Avenue
Friends Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend John Pea and Pastor Kevin Rohr officiating.
As was his wish he will be cremated, and his ashes scattered later at a private family gathering.
Visitation will begin Friday, March 10, 2023, after 1:00 PM in the Bates Funeral Chapel with family present from 5-7
p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
