Dorothy Howard
Oskaloosa. Dorothy E. Howard, 87, of Oskaloosa, died Friday, February 11, 2011, at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab in Oskaloosa. She was born June 24, 1923, at New Sharon, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Ethel Hyatt Davis. She graduated from the New Sharon High School with the class of 1940. On December 10, 1955, she was united in marriage to Curtis Howard at Lancaster, Missouri. Early on she worked at Monarch Laundry for several years. Lastly she worked at Dooley Manufacturing in Oskaloosa for over 20 years, retiring in 1991. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, and a former member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed taking summer vacations. Her family was the center of her life; she delighted in spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Her family includes her husband: Curtis Howard of Oskaloosa; 3 daughters: Bonnie Ongna of Oskaloosa, Linda (& Dick) Reese of Shell Knob, Missouri, and Vicki (& Jim) Barnett of Oskaloosa; 5 grandchildren: Jodie (& Mike) Seitz, Greg (& Peg) Ongna, Andy Albertson, Shelli (& Dwight) Teeter, Jamie (& Pat) Nienkerk; 12 great grandchildren: Drew, Colby, and Kade Ongna, Rachel Seitz, Andrew, Bailey, and Levi Albertson, Wyatt and Mason Teeter, Kierstyn, Hayden, and Isaac Nienkerk; a brother: Frederick Davis of Oskaloosa; two sisters in law: Karen (& Ed) Smith of Slidell, Louisiana and Lavoe Worrall of Gravois Mills, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her parents in law: Elvan and Edith Howard; a son in law: Rodney Ongna; a grandson: Steven Ongna; a sister in law: Genevie Davis; and a brother in law: Royden Howard.
Funeral services for Dorothy Howard will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the Friends Cemetery in New Sharon. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Monday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel. The family will be at the funeral chapel Monday from 6-8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice.
