Dance Team Busy Volunteering

Oskaloosa–As part of the NAIA’s Champions of Character initiative, the William Penn competitive dance team has volunteered in an assortment of activities this year.

The squad has spent two hours a week over the last several months, dating all the way back to August, working with two local dance teams, their Little Sister teams, on choreography, technique, and leadership roles.

WPU has also volunteered with North Mahaska High School on hosting a kids’ clinic that was followed by a community-supported dance recital in November.

Members and their families also worked to promote and participate in the Coaches vs. Cancer and Veteran’s Day football game activities. The team coordinated with local National Guard members to invite guests to the Veteran’s Day contest, hang and take down flags at Lacey Complex Stadium, and clean up following the game.

The dancers also helped US Bank to stuff school backpacks in August and were hosts at the Oskaloosa Elementary School’s Dining at the Ritz event which recognizes children for doing well in school. Also within the school district, the team worked with Parents as Teachers to read with youth from low-income families.

Finally, several individuals have participated in numerous local blood drives.

“Community involvement is very important and as a team we understand the commitment to others to assist in a common goal,” Head Coach Lisa Conner said. “We wish to lead by the examples we set for those who may follow in coming years.”
