Damage From April Storm Prompts Safety Steps

Orange fencing has been placed around the west entrance to the Mahaska County Courthouse because of the wind damaged roof and loose tiles.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The storm that blew through Oskaloosa on April 27th did lots of tree and some structural damage to town, and the Mahaska County Courthouse didn’t escape the storm’s wrath.

Portions of the roof had considerable damage as tiles were ripped from their hurricane clips, and others were cracked, with many pieces ending up on the street below.

That damage has caused a safety concern for those utilizing the courthouse, because of loose tiles remaining on the roof. Mahaska County Supervisor Mike Vander Molen called today to inform the public that the west entrance to the courthouse is closed until further notice, and that patrons should use the east entrance that is located in the alleyway between the courthouse and law center.

Vander Molen said that if a person with a disability needs access at this time, they can call 641.673.7148.

The condition of the roof was discussed at Monday’s supervisors meeting, and a special session has been called for Monday, May 12th at 9am to further discuss the situation.
