Fire Crews and Farmers Join Forces Amid High Winds

New Sharon Fire and Rescue Press Release

On October 29, at 5:09 pm, New Sharon Fire was paged for a combine and corn field fire near the intersection of Merino Ave and 180th St, one mile SE of Lacey. Mutual aid was requested from the Oskaloosa Fire Dept., Barnes City Volunteer Fire Dept., and Montezuma Fire Dept. Upon 1st crew’s arrival, the fire had already jumped 180th due to extremely windy conditions and was traveling towards a residence. 175th Street had to be shut down for a period of time due to visibility conditions. The combine was quickly extinguished with only minor damage but an estimated 60 acres were burned, including 15 acres of standing corn. Crews remained on scene until 7:30 pm.

A HUGE thank you to neighboring farmers who showed up with tillage equipment to help establish a fire break to get things under control: Ron Terpstra and his hired hand, Andy Van Utrecht, Steve Van Utrecht, Larry De Groot, and Shane Brelsford. We sincerely apologize if we missed anyone. We would also like to thank Mahaska County 911 Dispatch, Mahaska Co. Sheriff’s Office, and Mahaska Ambulance for their assistance. It was truly a community effort.
