DUBUQUE— The Central College women’s basketball team had open shots and plenty of chances, but the squad couldn’t convert in a 66-43 defeat at University of Dubuque Saturday.

“We didn’t shoot well at all,” said coach Mike Jacobsma. “We had the open looks and great opportunities. We played good defense in the first half, but we couldn’t transfer anything into points.”

The Dutch hit a chilly 30.2 percent from the floor. Dubuque (16-7, overall, 6-6 conference) shot out to an early 10-point lead in the first, and Central (10-13 overall, 3-9 conference) was never able to control the game. The Dutch made a small push and came within 12 points, finishing 32-20 at halftime.

The Spartans came out strong in the second, widening the gap to 20 points with 10:26 left in regulation. The Dutch climbed to within 48-31, but never got closer the rest of the way. Although Central outrebounded Dubuque 42-34, the Spartans shot 40 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range during the game. The Dutch shot just 16.7 percent from behind the arc.

“We had a lot of 2nd half offensive rebounds which put us in a good position, but we didn’t get the ball in the hole,” Jacobsma said. “We played defense more aggressively and we tried to create some movement on offense, but we couldn’t get the job done.”

Guards Kenzie Vander Molen (sophomore, Pella) and Rachel Evans (sophomore, Fort Dodge) scored 12 points and eight points, respectively. Evans had six rebounds. Forward Nicole Strasko (senior, Roland, Roland-Story HS) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

The Dutch have a few days to rest before hosting a women’s-men’s doubleheader against Loras College (16-6 overall, 6-5 conference) at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium on Wednesday. Tip-off is set at 6 p.m. The Dutch last played Loras at Dubuque on Jan. 19 and lost 65-49.

“We have these last two home games to finish stronger,” said Jacobsma. “We just need to come out and play.”

The women’s team will be hosting PINK night on Wednesday to raise awareness for breast cancer. All proceeds from donations will go to the Pella Regional Health Center Foundation for Breast Cancer Recovery.
