Dubuque–Janay Pritchett (Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Biology & Sociology) produced 25 points, but unfortunately it was in a losing cause as the Statesmen women’s basketball team fell 84-78 to Clarke in Midwest Collegiate Conference action Monday.

In a game that was postponed due to poor weather over the weekend, William Penn (7-11, 0-3 MCC) fell behind by as many as 19 points in the first half and trailed 40-23 at the half on just 25.0% shooting (CU was 50.0%).

The margin remained in the teens for much of the second stanza, including at 13 points (72-59) with 4:09 on the clock. The Statesmen finally caught fire and began to slowly chip away, but still trailed by 11 with 1:55 left.

Three straight scoring possessions got things quite interesting, though, making it a 78-74 contest just 35 seconds later. The teams unfortunately exchanged buckets over the final minute and WPU could get no closer to Clarke (8-12, 2-2 MCC).

Pritchett did almost all of her damage after intermission, scoring 19 of her 25 points on 7-for-10 shooting. She was 10-for-16 overall (5-for-7 FT) and also pulled down seven rebounds with four assists and two steals.

Brittany May (Sr., Gladstone, Ore., Biology) connected on four of her team’s six three-pointers en route to 13 points, while Jessie Kreuser (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn., Undecided) accounted for 13 points as well.

Vanessa Kieres (Jr., Chicago, Ill., Exercise Science), with eight points, and Dani Stahle (Sr., South Weber, Utah, History/Government & Psychology), with six, also contributed on the offensive end. Stahle topped WPU with nine rebounds and five assists.

The navy and gold dominated the glass 47-32 (21-8 offensive), but failed to do much with those extra chances, only outscoring the Crusaders 11-9 in second-chance points. The home squad, which outshot WPU 48.1%-42.0%, was more advantageous with an 18-7 edge in points off turnovers. Each side committed 15 mistakes Monday. William Penn also came up short at the line, going 14-for-23, while Clarke was 25-for-34.

Next: William Penn travels to La Crosse, Wis. Wednesday to face Viterbo in MCC play at 5:30 p.m.
