Christina Smith
Christina Smith, 62, of Oskaloosa, passed away June 7, 2024, unexpectedly at her home. She was born May 3, 1962, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence and Nancy (Wymore) Bittner. She attended Oskaloosa Schools and obtained her G.E.D. She continued her education through Indian Hills Community College, earning her CNA degree. In 1980, she was united in marriage to Michael Hayes, and to this union, three daughters were born: Jessica, Jacinda, and Nadia. The two later divorced. In 1991, she was united in marriage to Thomas Smith Jr., and to this union, a daughter Taylor was born. The two later divorced.
She began her working career at Pella Plastics. After she completed her CNA degree, she worked at Pella Hospital, Mahaska Hospital, and the county home. She moved to New Mexico and provided in-home health care. She returned to Oskaloosa and worked as a manager for Dollar General. Until her passing, she worked at Family Dollar in Albia. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting, crossword puzzles, playing video games, and spending time with her dog, Gizmo, who she cherished deeply.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters; Jessica (Eric Bates) Hayes of Oskaloosa, Jacinda (Cary Bethune) Hayes of Burlington, Nadia Harris of Burlington, and Taylor (Anthony) Winzer of Oskaloosa. Four grandchildren; Hayley, Julius, Lilyan, Tavian. One great-grandchild is on the way. Her father; Lawrence (Phyllis) Bittner of Battlefield, MO. Her mother; Nancy Criss of Oskaloosa. A stepbrother; Doug (Linda) Vander Waal of Springfield, MO.
She was preceded in death by her two brothers; Ricky and Brian Bittner, and A sister; Vicki Bittner. Her maternal grandparents; are Lena and Harmon Wymore. Her paternal grandparents; Elva and Viola Bittner. A uncle; Bob Kropp. Her dog: “Favorite Child” Sissy.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Dr. Delbert Bittner officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 11, 2024, after 1:00 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.
