Central’s Walker finishes runner-up at Wartburg men’s golf invitational

WAVERLY — Central College sophomore Nick Walker (Naperville, Ill., Neuqua Valley HS) was runner-up at the Wartburg College Spring Invitational Friday afternoon after a round of 73 at the par-72, 6,614-yard Prairie Links Golf Club in Waverly.

Walker navigated tough conditions with winds reaching 35+ mph and temperatures dipping to sub-40 degrees to shoot his one-over par round.

“Nick has been working really hard this winter and he’s seeing the results of his practice,” said coach Jon Olson. “Nick’s in a great place right now and I think he’s playing some of his best golf.”

Junior Nash Bucher (Huxley, Ballard HS) shot 75, sophomore Kobe Rhodes (Glenwood) shot 84, junior Zach Hansen (Nevada) shot 86 and junior Drew Mendoza (Manitou Springs, Colo.) shot 87.

Central finished fifth in the seven-team tournament with a combined score of 318, Nebraska Wesleyan University won the event with 303.

The Dutch also had four individuals in the event with junior Jeremy Schwab (Beach Park, Ill., Zion Benton HS) carded 76, sophomore Dillon Peters (Urbandale, West Des Moines Valley HS) fired 77, freshman Wyatt Crosby (Ottumwa) and junior Trent Sann (Clarion, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows HS) shot 79 apiece.

“Really happy with the way our second unit is pushing our top unit,” said Olson. “We need to do better on these tougher days and I think we’ll get there.”

Central’s next event is the Iowa Conference tournament April 27-28 at Finkbine Country Club in Iowa City. The final two rounds of the conference tournament are back at Prairie Links GC May 4-5.
