American Legion State Oratorical Contest set

U.S. FlagLocal applications due by Nov. 1

New Sharon high school student Caleb Gipple was the winning orator in last year’s American Legion Department of Iowa High School Oratorical Contest, besting all other contestants to advance to the Legion’s National Oratorical Contest in Indianapolis.

Could another area student make it two in a row for Mahaska County?

Oskaloosa’s Harry L. Anderson Post 34 of the American Legion is accepting applications until November 1 for the local contest to be held before mid-December. The winner of the local contest will advance to a district contest to be held in January.

Based on pre-determined aspects of the United States Constitution, assigned topics for the contest this year include Amendment 2, Amendment 3, Amendment 15 and Article 2 Section 4.

For an application, or to learn more about contest rules and the college scholarship prizes to be awarded, please contact Harry L. Anderson Post 34 at (641) 673-4457.
